Peterborough Speedway Goes Back to Green with the Touring Chase for the Colours Qualifier

IMG_2888After Mother Nature caused another unplanned break in the schedule, Canada’s Toughest 3rd of Mile Paved Oval bounced back – Saturday, August 1st – as the Touring Chase for the Colours with the OSCAAR Super Late Models, Modifieds and Midgets joined the home track Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun and Mini Stocks for the opening round of the Hot August Night Series.

In the first feature event of the evening Cody Fenton and Sean Kennedy would bring the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun teams to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Ryan Oosterholt jumped-out to an early lead and by the time a handful of laps showed on the scoreboard, the former track champion had caught the tail-end of the field. IMG_2876Kennedy and James Townsend – filling-in for Colin Parkes – held onto the 3rd spot, with Ray Schroer and Jordan Desroches rounding out the top 5. Oosterholt held off a strong charge from Kennedy – who ironically drives a car he purchased from the driver of the #79 machine – as he added another checkered flag to his 2015 win total.

With Ember Junkin and Steve Brier pacing the field, the Mini Stock field rolled from the staging area for their main 20 lap ‘A’ main. In one of his first runs of the season, IMG_2877Ryan Carr took control of the race early but as the race wore on the handle on his #3c started to go away, with Kevin Strutt challenging for the top spot. Not even a pair of late race caution flags and a green-white-checkered finish would deny Strutt from his very popular first win of the season. The division’s current point leader Tyler Junkin chased Strutt across the line with Brandon Hannah, Oosterholt, in the #45 usually run by Darryl Anthony and Donovan Price completing the top 5.

Jamie Bound claimed his second consecutive Peterborough Speedway OSCAAR Midget feature win over Brian Woodland, Richard Woodland, Dave Bradley and David Burrows. Gary McLean took the Modified division’s main event, with John Baker Jr., IMG_2883Chad Strawn, Brian McLean and Cory Horner second through 5th. Kevin Cornelius scored the OSCAAR Super Late Model win. J.R. Fitzpatrick, Kelly Balson, Ryan Kimball and Brent McLean followed Cornelius across the stripe. The full story from OSCAAR’s events can be found at www.oscaar.ca.

Qualifying heat races earlier in the night went to Ryan Oosterholt, James Townsend, Sean Kennedy and Jordan Desroches in the Battlefield Equipment Rental 4Fun. Donovan Price, Kevin Strutt, Brandon Hannah and Tyler Junkin took Mini Stock checkered flags. OSCAAR Midget preliminary rounds went to James Stanley, Jamie Bound, Rob McCall and Jessica James. Gary McLean with a pair, Cory Horner and Chris Milwain took the OSCAAR Modified heats. Ryan Kimball, J.R. Fitzpatrick, Mike Beyore and Kevin Cornelius claimed the Super Late Model qualifiers.

Bullring bullet points: The night’s 50/50 draw paid just over $873 to Laurie Griffin of Oshawa…Events got underway with a free corn roast presented by The Old Smoke House, Peterborough Speedway, OSCAAR and Farm Bro Racing.

The Hot August Night Series of racing continues Saturday, August 8th with the Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup Breast Cancer Society 100.
