Home Track Action Steps Up to the Peterborough Speedway Plate
It was a great night for racing as Central Ontario fans wrapped-up the opening night of the 2026 schedule – Saturday, May 30th – at Peterborough Speedway.
First of the night’s main events was a 20-lap headliner for the Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stocks, with Zachary Cheng and Eldon Hughes on the front row. Cheng jumped out to an early lead at the drop of the green flag, with veteran racer Dan Kimmerly hot on his tail. There were some excellent battles throughout the 22-car starting field, as Cheng built-up a commanding advantage and started to put backmarkers a lap down with less than a handful of circuits on the scoreboard. The driver of the No. 39 machine held on to score his first career headline event in the caution-free feature. Kimmerly, Steve Oakes, reigning track champion Alex Dallaire and Eldon Hughes rounded-out the top 5.
Coltin Everingham and Dan Archibald brought the Super Stock starting field to the Great Canadian RV green flag for a 25-lap main event. A yellow flag on the initial start saw the field re-racked for another kick at the can. Everingham took the early lead, with former track champion Miles Tyson close behind. Archibald, Herb Walters and opening night feature winner Bailey Jacobs completed the top 5 in the running order near the halfway mark. The leaders caught the tail-end of the field with less than a handful of laps remaining. Tyson closed on Everingham in the late stages but could only get close to the back bumper of the No. 48 ride.
– While Everingham and Tyson were first to cross the line, both cars were disqualified for a track width violation in post race inspection. Archibald was credited with the win, with Jacobs, Walters, Dylan Wills and Donovan Price next across the stripe.
With Wayne Dewey and Chris Cunnington showing the way, SwitchTire Mini Stock runners came to the line 17 starters strong with 20 laps to settle the score. After
Dewey elected to start from the tail of the field, the front row was now made-up of Cunnington and Coleridge Phinnemore. While Cunnington and Cameron McGlashan led the pack in a 4-car breakaway to the halfway point, James Townsend took the race lead with a daring pass heading into the 4th turn. Following a pair of yellow flags, Townsend continued to hold the advantage over Phinnemore. The pilot of the No. 14 machine took the win.
– The 2nd place finishing No. 80 ride of Phinnemore was disqualified for a wheelbase violation in post race inspection. McGlashan, John Lavalle, Cunnington and Dave Bragg were credited for the balance of the top 5 finishing spots.
Kelly Balson and multi-time track champion Dan McHattie held the front row starting spots for the 25-lap Late Model feature tilt. McHattie took the lead from the outside of the front row, but as quickly as the race started, it was slowed again with the No. 71 machine moved back a row as penalty for jumping the initial start. Balson took the lead on the restart and held the advantage until McHattie took control of the ‘A’ main with 5 laps on the scoreboard. The lead pack started to work through slower traffic around the same time as the race’s first caution flag with 10 laps complete. Another yellow slowed the pace but couldn’t keep McHattie from claiming his first win of the season. Ollie Ferguson, Balson, Steve Powell and Gary Hannah followed McHattie across the line.
Dave Bradley and Rob McCall led the Outlaw Midget Series, presented by Glenn Styres Racing starting field to the line. Bradley and McCall controlled the race
distance, with a yellow flag for an issue on the backstretch with just 4 laps on the board slowing the pack. Some tight battles were being waged throughout the pack. With sparks coming off the left rear of the No. 15 car, Bradley made it to Dart Heating & Air Conditioning victory lane. McCall, Robin McLean – who swept the 2025 Peterborough Speedway events – Mike Bradley and Fred Homewood completed the top 5.
Shawn Solomon and Jacob Stavropolous shared qualifying heat race wins for the Bone Stocks, while Coltin Everingham and Dan Archibald each had a Super Stock opening round checkered flag. Mini Stock preliminaries went to John Lavalle and James Townsend. John Owen and reigning track champion Ryan Kimball posed for victory lane photos following their Late Model qualifier wins. Mike Bradley, Jason Metcalfe, Dave Bradley, Rob McCall and Robin McLean were the top 5 finishers in the 15 lap Outlaw Midget qualifying event.
All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post race inspection.
Bullring bullet points: The pre-race practice sessions saw just as much action as the green flag racing. Cory Horne’s No. 09 Mini Stock was finished for the night after another car bounced-off the backstretch wall, leaving Horne with nowhere to go…Ryan Armstrong borrowed a ride from Shawn Solomon’s stable after his No. 44 Bone Stock was damaged in a front stretch incident when another car swerved into his path…After a lengthy absence, the track’s 50/50 draws made a return to Peterborough Speedway. Sponsored by the Kinsmen Club, the draw saw Peterborough’s Brian Dart collect a $ 835.00 prize. The long-time track supporter turned his winning share of the draw back to the charity.
Weekly race action continues Saturday, June 6th when Pepsi presents the first Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night for the 2026 season. Grandstand admission is $ 4.00 for a night of motorsports excitement with the home track Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock divisions, along with the GEN-3 Electrical OMRS SportsMods. Gates open at 4:00, with racing at 5:00.
