Peterborough Speedway Hosts a Full House for Double Toonie Night

Chamber of Commerce weather conditions and a capacity crowd combined to make the season’s 3rd and final Double Toonie/Fan Appreciation Night a success – Saturday, August 15th – at Peterborough Speedway.

First of the night’s main events was a 20-lap headliner for the Outlaw Midgets, presented by Glenn Styres Racing. Nick Spiez and Kevin Spiez brought the 16-car starting field to the green flag. Nick Spiez was the early leader, but he surrendered the spot to Jason Metcalfe a lap later. A pair of yellow flags brought the pack back together, with the line-up catching some lapped traffic with 7 circuits complete. Rob McCall took the race lead at lap 11 and held on for the main event win. Mike Homewood, Metcalfe, Fred Homewood and Rob McLean rounded out the top 5.

Knox Richardson and Troy Purvis led the Nadeau’s Collision Service Junior Late Model pack to the green flag with 15 laps or 20 minutes to settle the score. Owen Ephgrave was the early race leader with Lyla Sikma and Purvis close behind. After an incident in the 2nd turn with 5 laps complete, the lead group started putting slower traffic a lap down. A final yellow flag with only 3 laps remaining created a chase to the checkered flag, with Ephgrave taking the win. Purvis, Sikma, Brayden Cappuccitti and Kaiden Beatty were next across the stripe.

Stacy Switzer and Howie Crowe lined-up on the front row for the 20-lap Trent Lakes Complete Plumbing Renegade Truck feature tilt. Switzer – who is part of a 5-truck team that makes the haul from Bancroft for each event on the schedule – took the early race lead, with Crowe slipping into 2nd. The crowd favourite No.37 truck continued to hold the top spot, with Jack Dallin taking over the runner-up position from Crowe. Even with Switzer leading, the crowd’s attention was shifted to the No. 52 of James Townsend who has been filling-in in the Gordon Racing ride. After starting deep in the field – as the most recent feature winner – Townsend had moved to 2nd just past halfway and took the lead with only 3 laps remaining. Switzer suffered a flat right front tire with only 2 laps to go. Townsend took the win, with Crowe, Dallin, Shawn Murray and Stephen Bierworth rounding out the top 5.

The 15-car SwitchTire Mini Stock was led to the green flag by Rob Crick and Austyn Jennett. Jennett was the early race leader, with Cameron McGlashan, Crick, Matt McGrath and current point leader John Lavalle making up the early race frontrunners. A pair of yellow flags – just before and just after the halfway mark – bunched the field and saw Coleridge Phinnemore take over the runner-up spot with 5 laps remaining on the scoreboard. Jennett led the late race charge to the checkered flag, with Phinnmore, McGrath, Dave Bragg and Curtis Burnett completing the top 5.
In post race inspection, Jennett was found with an illegal header and disqualified. Phinnemore was credited with the win, with Rob Crick the new 5th place finisher.

The night’s final main event was a 20-lap dance for the GEN3 Electrical SportsMods, by OMRS. Glenn Morris and Ethan Thompson led the filed to the green flag. Rick Warnes – at the controls of the No. 77 in place of Brad Stevenson – took the early lead, with back-to-back Bill Pickford Memorial race winner Chad Strawn and the group’s 2025 champion John Baker Jr. close behind. The trio was locked in a tight battle for the race lead just short of the halfway mark, with Warnes able to maintain his advantage. Slower traffic became an issue as the leaders caught the tail end of the pack. As the race distance wore on, Strawn and JBJ continued to look to get around Warnes. As the trio worked through traffic on the final circuit, Baker Jr. took over the position and grabbed the win. Warnes, Strawn, Morris and Thompson completed the top 5.

Qualifying heat race wins from the Junior Late Models went to Owen Ephgrave and Kaiden Beatty. James Townsend and Howie Crowe split the Renegade Truck preliminary rounds, with Coleridge Phinnemore and Dave Bragg taking the Mini Stock heat race checkered flags. Rick Warnes, Chad Strawn, Ethan Thompson and John Baker Jr. had the GEN3 Electrical SportsMods opening round wins.

All finishing positions are unofficial until verified by scoring review and post race inspection.
