Alex Cuzzilla Scores Peterborough Speedway Ontario Modifieds Win
As the season rolls on, local racers and travelling groups run some of the year’s biggest events. Saturday, September 2nd Alex Cuzzilla picked-up the Ontario Modifieds Racing Series, presented by GEN-3 Electrical checkered flag at Peterborough Speedway.
Coming from the outside line on the initial green flag, Cuzzilla and his fellow front row starter Rick Warnes ran some high-speed laps, before Warnes moved into the top spot. A yellow flag for an issue in the 2nd turn with a handful of laps complete saw Cuzzilla take over the top spot on the restart, with Warnes and John Baker Jr. on his back bumper.
Cuzzilla ran some strong laps at the front of the field, with Tyler Boullion – who started 8th – worked his way into 4th. The field logged some strong laps during the closing stages of the 20-lap feature tilt, but no one had anything for the No. 50 of Cuzzilla, who grabbed the win. Rick Warnes, JBJ, Boullion, Andrew Massey, Bob Franks, Rob Richards, Randy Hollingsworth, Rob Warnes and Shane Pollock completed the running order.
Cuzzilla – the 2022 Ontario Modifieds Racing Series champion – also had a pair of qualifying event wins, with John Baker Jr. and Bob Franks taking the others…Before the event, OMRS officials announced that the early September date – part of the Peterborough Speedway Championship Clash – will now be known as the ‘Maebrae Memorial Classic’, to honour the contributions of former competitor Robert Maebrae, who succumbed to Cancer in November of 2022. In recognition of the announcement, the OMRS pace lap was in the Missing Man formation, leaving the pole position open. Group officials also received monetary donations from Rob Parkin, of Parkin Lawn Care and Bryan Cathcart from Apsley-Peterborough Transport toward the total race purse.
Ontario Modifieds Racing Series notebook: Based on their respective finishes in a pair of feature race events Saturday, August 26th at Flamboro Speedway, John Baker Jr. and Tyler Boullion were named co-champions of the 2nd annual running of the Bill Pickford Memorial, an OMRS spotlight show that honours the contributions of former racer and series founder Bill Pickford. The race format was split into 30 and 31-lap segments in recognition of the No. 61 machine that was campaigned throughout his career and rotates annually between Flamboro and Peterborough Speedway, the 2 tracks that host Ontario Modifieds Racing Series dates through the schedule.
The next date on the 2023 OMRS season is Friday, October 6th as part of Peterborough Speedway’s Autumn Colours Classic. During the group’s first ever appearance at the season-ending spectacular that will including qualifying heats and an ‘A’ main, they will also crown the overall champion.
For the 2023 schedule, Ontario Modifieds Racing Series action is once again presented by GEN-3 Electrical and sponsored in part by Awesome Racewear, as well as TNT Performance Products, Thinkpath Design, Bourque Transmission, All or Nothing Brewhouse and Clarke Motorsports Communications.
