Confidence Powers Steve Powell’s Charge to the Autumn Colours Classic

Volume levels climb much higher than they would in a traditional chess match but the moves are just as calculated and thought-out. Hometown racers are always looking for the strategy that will put them into the winner’s circle. Saturday, September 4th Steve Powell had all the right moves and picked-up his first career main event victory in the Late Model division at Peterborough Speedway.

The 45-year-old self-employed racer from Fraserville, Ontario – who spent the first year of his career in what is now known as the Super Stock division – used his inaugural trip to the winner’s circle as the capper to a 4th place finish in the 2021 point standings. He says with the annual running of the Autumn Colours Classic just around the corner, things came together at the perfect time.

“Our team works hard in the shop and at the track, so we knew it was going to happen sooner or later,” Steve Powell explained. “I’ve always heard that everyone loves a first-time feature winner and based on the comments and messages I received after our initial checkered flag, I’d have to say that’s the truth.”

Powell, who spends his spare time at the rink playing recreational hockey says that while he’s excited about returning to Peterborough Speedway for the 2022 season, he’d also like to branch out a little and maybe run a couple of APC Pro Late Model events at tracks like Sunset or Flamboro when his own racing ventures have a rare night off. Steve Powell says it’s the people that make racing at the local level such as positive experience.

“I have to thank my girlfriend Jamie Hayes, Blaine Delyea, my Dad Brad Powell and everyone else who has been involved with this team since its inception,” said the driver who admits he picked ‘72’ as his number because it would look good on the car. “I’ve been around racing my entire life and have met a lot of people who I can still call friends today. I’ve helped friends in the Super Late Model, Super Stock and CASCAR divisions over the years and have enjoyed every minute of it.”

Fans can watch Steve Powell and the No. 72 Cooper Glass, Dart Heating & Air Conditioning and J.J. Stewart Motors Late Model crew during the upcoming Autumn Colours Classic, presented by Lucas Oil and Pure Country 105 – October 8th through 10th – at Peterborough Speedway.
