Ontario Legends Opens 2019 With a Peterborough-Sunset Double Dip
After a washout earlier in the month, the 2019 schedule for the Eastern Ontario Legends – presented by www.trailersplus.net rolled to the line Saturday, May 18th for the first of this year’s dates at Peterborough Speedway.
A healthy field of 25 starters rolled to the line for the feature event, with Mark Griffin and Andre Fiorini on the front row. Fiorini grabbed an early lead, but shortly after the green flag waved, the caution was displayed for an incident in the 2nd turn. Back under green, former series champion Nicholas Ledson and Miles Tyson battled for the top spot, as the rest of the pack dodged the #57 machine of Kevin Foisy, who hadn’t come up to speed on the restart and pulled onto the infield pit lane.
Ledson – who has already enjoyed some success south of the border this season – took control of the field with 7 laps on the scoreboard and was using the outside line to work around some of the backmarkers, when the race’s 2nd yellow flag was thrown with 14 laps down for a turn 3 issue. After the restart, Fiorini grabbed the runner-up spot, but another yellow on lap 19 brought the pack back together for a final charge to the checkered flag.
Ledson’s #15N was the class of the field, as he took the season opening win over Tyson, Fiorini, Parker Traves and Adam Cuthbertson. Ledson also picked-up a pair of heat race victories, with the others going to Foisy, Traves, Griffin and Fiorini. Griffin’s win was the first of his career.
Sunday, May 19th, the tour was booked for an event at Sunset Speedway, as part of the track’s spring Velocity Weekend. 27 cars were in the pits, including several who weren’t at Peterborough the night before. After a first round of qualifying – with heat race wins by Adam Cuthbertson, Parker Traves and Robin Jongen – the skies opened-up and for the second time in the young season, a Sunset Speedway Ontario Legends Series was cancelled by rain.
Ontario Legends Series notes: Connor James, who made selected NASCAR Pinty’s Series starts in 2018 and plans to run the full Lucas Oil Sportsman Cup schedule this year, finished 9th in his Legends Series debut at Peterborough…The tour returns to action Saturday, June 1st at Peterborough Speedway for the first of this year’s Summer Toonie Nights.
