Hammer Down Saturday Night Action Returns to Peterborough Speedway

Home track Late Model and Bone Stock teams were joined by the Ontario Legend Car and Outlaw Midget tours for the Saturday, August 23rd line-up at Peterborough Speedway.

With 20 laps on the agenda, Jamie McLean and Mike Bradley brought the GSR Outlaw Midgets to the Great Canadian RV green flag. Bradley pushed his No. 15 ride into the top spot, with the most recent Peterborough Speedway race winner Robin McLean taking the runner-up position. Jason Metcalfe and Rob McCall also joined the fight. Robin McLean took over the race lead with 5 laps on the scoreboard with Bradley, McCall and Metcalfe close behind. A late race yellow flag slowed the pace, but couldn’t keep the No. 97 machine from victory lane, as Robin McLean scored the win. Metcalfe, Jamie McLean, Dave Inglis and McCall completed the top 5.

Steve Powell and John Owen brought the KOD Disposal Late Model field to the track for a 25-lap headliner. Powell was the early race leader, with Owen slipping back in the running order by virtue of his starting spot on the outside line. The race’s first yellow flag waved for an incident in the 4th turn, with 4 laps complete. Multi-time track champion Dan McHattie took the race lead with 6 laps on the scoreboard, with current point leader Ryan Kimball, James Horner, Powell and Gary Hannah in tow. Several yellow flags over the next few laps kept the race pace slow, with McHattie maintaining the lead. The leaders encountered backmarkers with 21 laps complete, with McHattie adding another checkered flag to his resume at the end of the race distance. Kimball, Horner, Ollie Ferguson and Owen completed the top 5. McHattie, Kimball and Horner collected bonus payments of $250, $150 and $100 respectively, from Ron and Patti Skelton.

Chase Downer and John Bates were on the front row for the 20 lap Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock feature. Firing from the outside line, Bates grabbed the early race lead. As quickly as the green flag waved, the race pace was slowed by a caution for an issue in the 3rd turn. Bates kept control on the restart, with Dan Kimmerly, Alex Dallaire, Sam Arnott and Downer in close pursuit. While Bates led the way, Eldon Hughes and Kimmerly were locked in a fight for 2nd, with Dallaire and Arnott fighting over 3rd. Another yellow flag – again in the 3rd turn – created a green, white checkered finish with John Bates scoring the win. Hughes, Arnott, Kimmerly and Jacob Stavropoulos completed the top 5.

Current point leader Dawson Drimmie and Wes Cuthbertson showed the way for the 25 lap Trailers Plus Ontario Legend Car Series National Qualifier, presented by Skelton Truck Lines and ATS Healthcare. Drimmie was the early race leader, but Adam Cuthbertson quickly brought his No. 79 ride to the party. With only a single yellow flag to slow the pace, it looked like Drimmie would be a lock for another feature win. That was until a late race pass – with only 4 laps remaining – saw Cuthbertson take over the top spot and score the race win. Drimmie held on to the runner-up position, with Wes Cuthbertson taking 3rd. Gibson Baker and Jake Spencer-Walt completed the top 5. Adam Cuthbertson, Drimmie and Wes Cuthbertson collected bonus money from Ron and Patti Skelton of $250, $150 and $100 respectively for their efforts.

Ryan Kimball and Dan McHattie each picked up a pair of Late Model preliminary round checkered flags. Qualifying events for the Bone Stocks were won by Kyle Novis, Dan Kimmerly, Jacob Stavropoulos and Christen Lavalle. The opening rounds of Ontario Legend Car Series action went to Dawson Drimmie, Mitch Wright, Mark Griffin and Adam Cuthbertson.

Jason Metcalfe took the checkered flag in the 15-lap GSR Outlaw Midget qualifying event, with Rob McCall, Robin McLean, Dave Inglis and Jamie McLean completing the top 5. Mike Bradley, Ryan Lusk, Hunter Kavanaugh, Kevin Spiesz, Jeff Puro, Brett Dorion and Mikey Homewood completed the running order.

All finishing positions are unofficial and subject to post race inspection and scoring review.

Bullring bullet points: GEN-3 OMRS SportsMods racer Garrett Yake made his first start in the KOD Disposal Model division, with Bill Jessup and Tyler Junkin returning to battle in the same class. Sean Walker filled in again for Kelly Balson in the No. B10 Late Model…The night got off to an inauspicious start for Gary Hannah. Making his first start since a wreck a few weeks ago, the driver of the No. 03 Late Model spun in the first turn during practice and was hit by another car. Several other teams pitched in in the pit area to put Hannah’s car back together and he finished 2nd in each of his qualifying events. Gary Hannah’s rough night continued during the Late Model feature when he was collected in a wreck and the car was towed back to the pits…A low number of entries led to track officials cancelling the planned Reverse and Flagpole Races that had been scheduled to conclude the night’s program.

The regular season finale will take the green flag Saturday, August 30th at 4:00 as Peterborough Speedway hosts the annual Championship Clash. 2025 titles in the home track Bone Stock, Mini Stock, Renegade Truck, Super Stock, Late Model and Junior Late Model divisions will be decided. The track will also host the Non-Winner’s Races, as well as the GEN-3 Electrical OMRS SportsMods. Grandstand gates will open at 3:00.
