2012 SEASON KICKS OFF
The first long weekend of the summer season, and the heat rolls into Canada’s Toughest 1/3rd mile Oval – Peterborough Speedway, with free grandstand admission and the best racing action anywhere in Ontario.
Battlefield Equipment – 4Fun’s
A lot of new faces in the 4Fun division with both veteran racers and rookies taking to the track. Heat 1 had the young Griffin Powell (14) sponsored by none other than “Mom & Dad’s Visa” take the Checker flag, followed by #73 Andrew Akers in Heat 2. #99 Chris Mulders picked up a win in Heat #3 and Heat #4 saw Peter Moore”s #17 in victory Lane.
The feature race for the 4Fun’s was one of the most exciting yet to kick off a season with the #88 of Tiffany Vandebuilt coming from the back of the pack after a late race caution to scream through the field and challenge Mulders #99 in an all out last lap battle to the finish with #99 Chris Mulders (FarmPro) getting his 1st feature win at Peterborough Speedway.
Peterborough Hyundai – Mini-stocks
What happens when you mix a few rookies, the current track champion, a past track champion, and an Autum Colours Classic champion with the most competitive class of racing in Ontario? You get Mini-stock action. The Peterborough Hyundai Mini-stock is full of talent with #44 (Current Track Champion) Daryl Fice taking Heat 1, Tyler Junkin (#41) who is still looking for his 1st ever season Championship despite being one of the most winning drivers the series has seen take Heat #2, Alex Lees (#07) picks up Heat #3 but that would not be the end of his night, and the #33 of Warren Paxton make an impressive debut to the Mini-stock series with a heat win in Heat #4. But the night belonged to the #07 of Alex Lees as he too chases his 1st Championship in just his sophomore year in Mini-stocks.
Parry Springs – Renegade Trucks
Stephen (Daddy) Biersworth (#49) starts off the season with both a heat win and feature win over rival and current champion #12 Andy McCann.
Vanguard Self Storage – Late Models
A field full of Champions and veterans alike, but the “crowd pleaser” #10 Kelley Balson would sweep both heats and the feature but not without some serious challenges from drivers like Bob Kish (#78) and #22 Chris Mitchell (current Autumn Colours Champion)
Ontario Legend Series
21 classic rocketships took to the oval as the Legends opened their season at Peterborough Speedway. Current Champion Andy Warbutton(#24) kicked off his season in New York State with a bad crash that almost ended his season last week, but Canada’s Toughest 1/3rd mile oval was a little kinder as he picked up a win in Heat #1. Heat #2 had a young rookie Nick Ledson (#15N) pickup his 1st win. 2 time series champion Adam Cuthbertson took Heat #3, and Wavin’ Willie #4 Bill Mason took heat #4. There is a reason Warbutton is the current champion, perserverance, and it paid off as he battled it out with some of the most experienced and accomplished drivers in the series to take the Feature win parking his #24 in victory lane once more.
There is more action to come, but if your just reading the action, maybe it’s time to get out and experience it for yourself at Canada’s toughes 1/3rd mile Oval – Peterborough Speedway.
