Weather Couldn’t Stop Peterborough Speedway’s Saturday Night Action
Mother Nature has been the bane of local racing promoters this summer. Even though she threw a torrential downpour into the afternoon’s practice session the Saturday, August 7th program at Peterborough Speedway went into the record books with only a slight delay.
26 starters took the green flag for the inaugural Qwick Wick Fire Starter Super Stock Series start at Canada’s Toughest 3rd Mile Oval. Carson Nagy picked-up the checkered flag. Lane Zardo, Gerrit Tiemersma, Nic Ramsay and Ethan Constable rounded-out the top 5. Peterborough Speedway regular Rob Richards led from start to finish to win the last chance qualifier and was 13th in the main event. After just failing to qualify for the Super Stock Series feature, home track regular Tyler Bouillon was offered the chance to join the Ontario Sportsman Series starting line-up. The Burketon Station driver made the most of the opportunity with a commanding win in the 50 lap ‘A’ main. Chad McGlynn, Kevin Gallant, Kevin Trevellin and James Townsend completed the top 5. The Battlefield Equipment Rental Bone Stock field rolled from the staging area for the first of the Peterborough Speedway weekly racing division feature events of the night with John Bates and Cory Horne on the front row. A yellow flag waived before the first lap was scored, resulting in a complete restart. Bates, Angelo Novis and Sean Kennedy were locked in a 3-way battle for the lead, with Ryan Oosterholt charging through traffic from his 10th place starting spot. Just as the multi-time track champion moved into the runner-up spot, a 4 wreck in the 3rd turn brought things to a halt. There were no injuries in the crash, but none of the involved drivers were able to continue. Back under the green, Oosterholt took control of field with 9 laps on the scoreboard and continued his winning streak. Shawn Solomon, Kennedy, Novis and Connor Parkes rounded-out the top 5.
Oosterholt and Solomon shared checkered flags in the night’s Bone Stock qualifying heats.
The 20 lap Jiffy Lube Mini Stock feature came to the stripe with Jassen Whyte and Kevin Strutt at the front of pack. Whyte and former Bone Stock track champion Jeremy Kelly fought for the lead, with Kelly taking control after only a pair of laps. As he did earlier in the Bone Stock feature, Oosterholt was picking-off positions lap-after-lap and was 5th with only 5 circuits complete. As the field worked through the backmarkers, the potent No. 79 Prelude was running 2nd at halfway and took a lead he wouldn’t relinquish with less than a handful of laps remaining. Kelly, Ryan Edwards-Kiss, Brad Lavalle and Tyler Junkin took 2nd through 5th at the checkered flag.
Oosterholt had a pair of Mini Stock preliminary round wins, with the others going to Tyler Junkin and Brad Lavalle.
With his latest wins Ryan Oosterholt remains unbeaten in 2021 Bone Stock and Mini Stock heat race and main event competition.
Stacy Switzer and her father Stephen Bierworth split the Renegade Truck division heat wins.
All finishing orders are unofficial and subject to scoring review and post-race safety and technical inspection.
