Plans are in the Works for the 2022 Season at Peterborough Speedway
As soon as one schedule crosses the finish line, hometown track promoters begin making plans on the next season. Staff and officials at Canada’s Toughest 3rd Mile Oval have barely had time to unwind from the year that wrapped-up with the 29th running of the Autumn Colours Classic. The promotional team has already started to work on the 2022 line-up. Track owner and promoter J.P. Josiasse says its best to strike while iron is hot.
“Even with the rainout, we still ran 3 weeks worth of racing in the 2 days of Autumn Colours. Some things worked very well, while others didn’t,” admitted Josiasse. “Everything that happens on the track is documented and closely monitored on a timing sheet. Not just during the season-ending show, but on a weekly basis as well. It all gets reviewed after the races and we have regular meetings with the on-track officials and safety crews.”
Josiasse says that even though Peterborough Speedway has been part of the provincial motorsports landscape for more than half a century, this is no time for the operation to rest on its laurels. During the opening round of the event billed as the Super Bowl of Stock Car Racing, track officials received word that restrictions limiting the size of allowable gatherings had been lifted. That opened the door for 100% capacity at its events. The team at the popular Central Ontario oval looks at that as the starting point as they begin plans for the new season.
“Like everyone else, COVID threw us some curves and that led to a couple of false starts in 2021. We’re looking at the latest provincial protocol as a positive step,” Josiasse said. “Right now, we’re looking at the possibility of kicking things off on Victoria Day Weekend like we’ve always done before. All of our regular classes will be back and we’ve also spoken to some of our special guest divisions like the Ontario Legends, OMRS and more. They’re on board so it looks like good news all around.”
If everything goes according to plan, officials are planning to return to a full regular season of weekly racing. Before COVID restrictions in 2020 that meant about 18 weekly shows including the 3 Fan Appreciation Nights. As always, the year will conclude with the annual running of the fan favourite Autumn Colours Classic, presented by Lucas Oil.
Plans for the return of the APC Pro Late Model Series, along with the Super Stock Tour – that was run under the Qwick Wick Fire Starter banner in 2021 – have been confirmed for Saturday, June 18th. Officials will release to full schedule early in the New Year, with online ticketing also available. Fans can also look for the Peterborough Speedway display during the return of the Motorama Custom Car and Motorsports Expo – March 11th to 13th, 2022 – at the International Centre.
